Road fatalities are the top cause of death for children and young adults worldwide. Around 1.35 million people die each year on the world’s roads, and over 20 million are seriously injured. Road crashes are a leading cause of death and injury in Australia.
The ‘Five Fatal’ choices people make that result in death are:
- Speeding
- Alcohol & Drug Driving
- Distraction
- Fatigue
- not wearing Seatbelts.
These choices are largely preventable. Human error is a factor in over 90% of crashes. Only 7% of road crashes are true ‘accidents’ in which the driver could have done nothing to prevent them.
Changing the choices people make is about changing the culture in which those choices are made. And the best way to change a culture is through everyday conversations with family, friends and those around us.
