Conversations are the most powerful lever we have for changing the world. Be part of this Next Level Conversation and share your thoughts on ‘Energy & Resources’…
“Of all the existential crises facing humanity, this is the biggest and the least talked about – how can 9 billion people live indefinitely on Earth with finite resources? We are currently using resources 1.7 times faster than the Earth’s ability to regenerate them and we only maintain that deficit by literally digging deeper. Travel is a practical, everyday topic to start with when talking about finite resources…
- a Boeing Jumbo burns 15,000 litres/hour i.e. about 30 litres/person/hour for the summer trip to Europe;
- a 2500 RAM Laramie uses 20 litres/100km i.e. about 10 litres/person/hour for Dot and Bert doing the lap of Oz;
- large cruise ships use 300,000 litres of low-grade fuel * per day i.e. about 2.5 litres/person/hour for the once-in-a-lifetime Pacific cruise;
- a Toyota Corolla uses 4 litres/100km i.e. about 2 litres/person/hour for a couple driving between capital cities
* ADDITIONAL GRIM FACT: the low grade fuels in cruise ships are also really shit for the environment.
Conversations about resource depletion are best when we talk less about what others are doing. And way more about what we ourselves are doing.”
